Project title: Provision of Consultancy on KMA’s possible interventions to unlock the commercial potential of Kenya’s inland waters (Lake Victoria and Lake Turkana)

Description: The purpose of this project was to prepare an integrated consultancy plan as well as the corresponding methodology in order to identify recommendations to be made to Kenya Maritime Authority with regards to possible interventions to unlock the commercial potential of Kenya's inland waters and more specifically of the lakes Victoria and Turkana. The primary objective of the Consultancy was to come up with recommendations that will enable KMA to intervene within its mandate on enhancing the development of multi-modal transport potential and unlock the full potential of other economic opportunities on the Lakes. The study further established the needs for integrated medium and long term planning, appropriate needed infrastructure, as well as policy interventions necessary to support full exploitation of identified opportunities.
Objectives: The study methodology should met the following objectives:
- Evaluation of the existing status with regards to stakeholders involved, infrastructures, transportation and policy framework.
- Recommendations for measures needed to optimize current operation of maritime transport as well as unlock potential linked to enhanced socio economic development establishing a viable multi-modal transportation system in the inland waters.
- Proposals for measures to attract potential investments that will strengthen economic prosperity in the area.
- Monitoring and evaluation of the process in order to make sure that the study is results oriented and gives practical and applicable information to KMA
HIT key role and responsibilities: CERTH/HIT acted as subcontract to the Hellenic Registry of Shipping (HRS) who was the Project Manager.
