Dr. Maria Spandou was born in Thessaloniki in 1979 and she has been working as a Research Associate at the Institute for Sustainable Mobility and Transport Networks (IMET) of the National Center for Research and Technological Development (CERTH) since May 2018. In 2003 she graduated from the Department of Rural & Surveying Engineering at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), while in 2004 she obtained a Masters Degree in Design, Organization and Management of Transport Systems from the same University.
In 2016 she completed her doctoral thesis under the title “Framework for the evaluation of metropolitan public transport systems”, elaborated in the Technical University of Lisbon (Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa – UL/IST) in the framework of the MIT | Portugal Program. She was also been a Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2010-2011) and at the Columbia University (2012).
She has worked as a Technical Consultant for the Regional Operation Program of Central Macedonia, as a Associate Transport Planner at the former Thessaloniki Public Transport Authority (ThePTA), currently Thessaloniki Transport Authority (TheTA), as well as a Research Associate at UL/IST and AUTh, with participation in European, other International and National Research Projects in various mobility-related areas.
Her main research interests include: strategic, tactical and operational planning of Urban Public Transport systems, institutional design and governance of Transport and Mobility systems, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), development, monitoring and evaluation of European & National Transport Policies and Mobility Plans etc. She has co-authored a number of book chapters and conference papers and she is fluent in Greek and English, while she also has excellent knowledge of Portuguese, good knowledge of German and basic knowledge of Turkish.
