
Dr. Vasilios Kappatos assumed the duties of Director of the Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT) of the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) as of 01/03/2026.
His election was carried out by a seven-member Special Selection Committee, consisting of Greek scientists and academics in Greece and abroad, appointed by the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (NCRTI) of the General Secretary for Research and Innovation (GSRI) of the Ministry of Development.
With years of experience in research and the academic community, he has substantially contributed to the development and scientific progress of the Institute and now takes on the responsibility of further strengthening HIT's strategic role at both national and international level.
Dr. Kappatos has built a distinguished academic and research career, with a broad field of expertise and an active presence in the international scientific community. Since 2019, he has been a Researcher at HIT/CERTH, while since 2024 he has served as Head of Sector C “Non-land Transport, Environmental and Economic Issues”.
The vision of the new Directorate is to strengthen scientific excellence, enhance international outreach, and foster synergies with the academic community, industry, and public authorities, with the aim of promoting and implementing innovative solutions for sustainable mobility and modern transport networks.
