Promotion of triple helix cooperation in the nexus tourism and sustainable mobility at the 2nd webinar of the Interreg Adrion Project SUSTOURISMO

On 15 April, the second webinar of SUSTOURISMO took place, counting over 80 participants. This is the second of a series of four webinars which will be organised to connect and promote the dialogue among key players of the tourism industry and public transport sector to raise awareness and address key drivers of sustainable tourism and reduce the carbon footprint of tourism.

The two-hour webinar focused on the results of promoting sustainable mobility in tourism brought about by the collaboration of researchers with institutional and economic stakeholders. The aim of the event as presented by the Central European Initiative – Executive Secretariat (CEI-ES), which leads this technical activity, was to determine the added value of using the concept of a triple helix cooperation model for sustainable tourism, to emphasize the importance of scientific research for informed decision-making and to identify the most effective participatory approaches.

The CEI-ES, in cooperation with MATE and Corintea introduced the Triple Helix principles and the benefits of the implementation of a tourism monitoring system.

The International research institute EURAC Research presented some successful examples of this model of cooperation for the development of cycle tourism in the framework of Interreg projects and presented their work within the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) and the work of the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of South Tyrol (STOST) which has been implemented in 2018 to continuously monitor, assess and communicate the tourism development of South Tyrol and its impacts.

SUSTOURISMO lead partner, the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH), presented its longstanding experience in establishing an effective and well-functioning partnership in the field of tourism and mobility. The internationally recognized institution for the study of urban transport and sustainable mobility has concluded a formal agreement with the Thessaloniki Tourist Organization to promote sustainable tourism including the implementation of a single tourist card for the metropolitan area of Thessaloniki and access to the SUSTOURISMO App and touristic packages.

The Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA-LUR) presented the regional regulation and competencies and the preparation of relevant documents in the field of sustainable mobility in recent years; the Expert guidelines for the regulation of regional public transport, the Expert guidelines for the navigability of the Ljubljanica River and the Integrated Transport Strategy of the Ljubljana Urban Region. These guidelines are a good example of a successful integration of the institutional and research level for the sustainable development of regional mobility.

The event closed with a debate moderated by CEI-ES with the participants, focused on the importance of cooperation of scientific institutions with decision makers at local, regional, and national levels. Finally, participants were invited to participate to the 3rd webinar, which will be organised in autumn 2021.
