Project Title: Assessing the Impact of Nomadic Devices Applications Usage in Road Transportation of Sensitive Goods
Duration: 30 months (14/12/2010 —13/06/2012)
Description: HERMES was a Greek pilot project, co-funded by the European Regional Development fund (ERDF) of the European Union and by national resources, under the 2007-2013 National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) and the Operational Programme Competitiveness and Entrepreneurship (OPC II) framework. The objective of the project was to assess the impact of applications provided to drivers through nomadic devices (eg navigators, smartphones, etc.) used in-vehicle, as well as to inform the general public about their contribution to transportation system, emphasizing their contribution to safety, transport and mobility efficiency, mobility of people and goods and environmental impact. The project investigated the impact of use of nomadic devices for professional drivers that are involved with sensitive transportations (e.g. transportation of dangerous goods). For the complete documentation of the applications, a human-centered method was applied, ie the needs of the users were considered. The applications that were recognized as the most representative, they were used in real conditions. The implemented applications allow on the one hand the communication of the driver with the control center in case of event (eg failure) or accident and on the other hand the automatic information of the control center for the quality of driving the vehicles. In this way, (a) the information of the necessary bodies (eg ambulances, etc.) will be able to be handled centrally by the control center, which ensures the timely and valid information of the relevant bodies, while (b) the control center will be aware of the driving quality of the fleet vehicles, which ensures the control of the compliance of the drivers of the fleet vehicles with the traffic code but also the increased safety measures that apply in the transport of sensitive and dangerous loads.
Objectives: The project investigated the impact of use of nomadic devices for professional drivers that are involved with sensitive transportations (e.g., transportation of dangerous goods). More specifically, the main objective was the evaluation of the effects of applications available in nomadic devices within the vehicles, focusing on safety, mobility, environment and efficiency of transportation, as well as user acceptance.
HIT key role and responsibilities: The development of the evaluation framework and experimental plans along with the analysis of the large-scale and long-term field trial in Attiki region with commercial drivers.
