Acronym: WATERBRIDGING

Project Title: Sustainable and Seamless Waterways Bridging Adriatic-Ionian region

Duration: 36 months (1/9/2024 – 31/8/2027)

Total project budget: 1.390.320,00 € (80% Interreg funds, 20% partner contribution)

Description: WATERBRIDGING is an EU Project co-funded by the Interreg IPA ADRION programme (https://www.interreg-ipa-adrion.eu/). Launched in September 2024, WATERBRIDGING aims at boosting the sustainability and the seamless integration of the maritime and inland waterways (IWW) connecting the Adriatic-Ionian region, to enhance the Motorways of the Sea as efficient and smart alternative to land transport. WATERBRIDING streamlines Adriatic-Ionian waterways as bridge for traffic flows between the territories of the macro-region as well as towards the surrounding areas, by upgrading the environmental and digital performance of maritime and IWW nodes involved.

The WATERBRIDGING consortium consists of a total of 8 partners from 3 EU and 3 non-EU IPA ADRION area countries: Italy, Greece, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and North Macedonia. The project is coordinated by ADSPMAC, the Central Adriatic Ports Authority, Italy.

Objectives: WATERBRIDGING ambition is to improve the efficiency, integration and sustainability of the ADRION MOS and IWW representing a more efficient and competitive solution for moving goods within the AI Macro-Region compared to land transport alternatives, and thus contribute to the dynamism and competitiveness of the macro-regional economy and enhancement of its role as a bridge between the east and west med regions.

HIT key role and responsibilities: HIT role and responsibilities as project partner are the following:

  • Lead the Work Package for assessing the sustainability and seamless integration potentials for Adriatic-Ionian Smart MOS, including the drafting of a joint methodological framework for conducting relevant studies.
  • Perform technical activities including the implementation of the joint methodological framework for Greek ports cases, the consolidation of the outcomes of all relevant studies from project partners and a simulation of Adriatic-Ionian MOS and IWW traffic in the EUSAIR macro-region.
  • Participate in the communication and dissemination activities of the project, including the organisation of a transnational event for the presentation of the project results.
