Project title: COdesign urban REalm & dynamic Spaces management for cognitive & socially connected cities
Duration: 48 months (1st January 2026 – 31st December 2029)
Description: CORESpaces is a four-year Horizon Europe project funded under the EU Mission for Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities. This project brings together 45 organisations from across Europe aiming to transform how cities co-design, allocate and manage public space, making the urban realm more human-centred, resilient, inclusive and climate-neutral.
Objective: CORESpaces is developing the COREInnovations, a set of adaptable digital solutions combining Artificial Intelligence, local Digital Twins, data spaces and advanced participatory planning processes in order to support road and public-space reallocation, dynamic parking and curbside management, urban freight operations, sustainable and multimodal mobility, smart electric-vehicle charging and the development of green and blue infrastructure.
The CORESpaces solutions will be developed and evaluated in ten European Living Labs. The Leading Living Labs/cities are London (UK), Thessaloniki (Greece), Tartu (Estonia) and Eindhoven & Helmond (the Netherlands), where digital simulations and real-world demonstrations will be carried out. The solutions will subsequently be adapted and replicated in the Follower Living Labs/cities of Limassol (Cyprus), Verona (Italy), Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Fribourg (Switzerland) and Ungheni (Moldova). Through the active participation of citizens, public authorities, transport operators, research organisations and businesses, the project will produce transferable tools, policy guidance, and governance and financing models to facilitate the wider adoption of its solutions by other European cities.
HIT key role
As the project coordinator, CERTH/HIT plays a pivotal role in the development of the innovative tools that will support urban planning, as well as in the coordination, monitoring and evaluation of the measures to be implemented across the participating cities. In addition, CERTH/HIT is a key member of the Thessaloniki Smart Mobility Living Lab, actively contributing to the co-design, implementation and evaluation of the city's interventions in close collaboration with local authorities, stakeholders and citizens.
