Project title: Road safety community awareness programme for Elementary and High School students, under the sponsorship of Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP A.G.)
Duration: 10 months (25/04/2016 – 06/02/2017)

Description: The Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT/CERTH), under the sponsorship of Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP A.G.), has successfully organized and implemented during the period 05/2016-02/2017 road safety seminars addressing elementary and high-school students of the Prefectures of Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia - Thrace.
The road safety programme was conducted in two phases. The visits included the implementation of a 2-hour seminar per class in each school by highly trained transportation engineers and expert educators, with the use of specialized training material (educational handbooks, activity books and e-learning tools), which varied according to the target age group.
Concerning the elementary schools the following educational units were covered:

  • Acquaintance with the vehicles and especially the heavy ones
  • Fundamental safety rules for walking
  • Acquaintance with basic traffic signaling
  • Safety rules for cycling
  • Travelling with safety within vehicles and means of public transport
  • Basic safety rules at construction site areas

In November 2016 the implementation of the road safety programme in the elementary schools has been successfully completed. The programme’s activities included the implementation of 1110 training seminars in 145 elementary schools and were attended by more than 20.000 pupils.
In February 2017, the implementation of the road safety programme in elementary schools and high schools of the regions of Kozani, Florina, Kastoria, Pella, Imathia, West Thessaloniki, Drama, Kavala, Serres, Evros, Xanthi and Rodopi has been also successfully completed.
The basic educational units covered by the 2-hour interactive seminars in high schools included:

  • Road accidents and drivers’ responsibility
  • Basic road accident causes in relation to the driver’s condition (i.e. fatigue, distraction by the use of the mobile phone, etc.)
  • Dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or other substances
  • Speed effect on reaction and braking times
  • Mobility options alternative to private car

In total, more than 200 seminars took place in 60 high schools and were attended by more than 4.800 students.
The evaluation of the program was conducted through a questionnaire survey among the teachers and revealed a very high satisfaction of the respondents, in terms of content, educational goals and key messages of the seminar and the training materials.
Further to the implementation of the training visits, HIT/CERTH, in cooperation with the Art Company SourLiBooM, created the theatrical, interactive play “Fos Fanari” for elementary students, which was presented to the “Ecofestival” of the Municipality of Serres (05-08 / 06/2016), the “Cosmopolis” culture festival of the Municipality of Kavala (23/07/2016) and the “Researcher’s Night”, held in the commercial centre “Cosmos” in Thessaloniki (30/09/2016). More information about the seminar is available on the website www.edu.imet.gr.

Objectives:The aim of the project was to educate children and adolescents on road safety and behavior issues, as well as to raise awareness (especially for adolescents) on sustainable ways of travel (walking, cycling, public transport).

HIT key role and responsibilities: HIT created the educational material used for this action (tailored to the age groups of the participants), as well as organized and implemented the seminars. HIT mobilized transportation engineers and expert educators, with special training in traffic education and safety and security.
