Acronym: COFRET
Project Title: Carbon Footprint of Freight Transport
Duration: 36 months (04/05/2011 - 30/04/2014)
Description & Objectives:
COFRET's scope, adjusted to take account of the latest international developments, is:
- To review existing methodologies for the calculation of carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of freight transport and logistics in the context of supply chains and evaluating their compatibility with EN 16258 standard;
- To identify gaps and ambiguities in the calculation guidelines within the EN 16258 standard relating to coverage of freight transport and logistics, supported by the means of real-life case studies;
- To prioritise suggestions for possible approaches to achieve comparability for the calculation of emissions along supply chains.
In its early stages COFRET conducted detailed reviews and a consultation exercise to look into user needs and the state-of-the-art relating to methods, tools and data for calculation of the carbon footprint for logistics chains as a part of supply chain management. A comparative analysis and evaluation of existing, available methodologies and tools will now reveal common elements as well as gaps and issues not yet covered. Whilst focusing on CO2 emissions, COFRET will also consider other GHG such as CH4 and N2O.
HIT key role and responsibilities: HIT is Partner in the project.
