The Hellenic Institute of Transport (HIT), being an internationally known and recognised research organisation in Greece, offers fundamental and applied research as well as high level technical services in the transport sector. HIT undertakes research programs and specialised studies of fundamental and applied research, organises and manages transport documentation centres.

The Institute is led by the Director, who heads all the departments of the Institute and is a member of the CERTH's Board of Directors. The HIT Scientific Council, composed of members of the Institute, works as an adjunct to the work of the Director. At the same time, along with the Scientific Council of IMET, the External Advisory Board functions as a consultative and advisory body. The Director is supported by the Organisation and Administration Unit, the Economic Control and Management Unit and the Secretariat Support and Quality Assurance Unit.
The Organisation and Administration Unit is responsible for the administrative support of the entire Institute, ensuring the smooth functioning of the Institute, and serving as an Executive Secretariat to the Institute's Director and Scientific Council. The Economic Control and Management Unit is responsible for the smooth and prudent financial management of the Institute's projects, being at the same time responsible for monitoring research programs, contracts with private entities and HIT grants.
The Secretariat Support and Quality Assurance Unit ensures quality across the entire range of processes and projects of the Institute, following the ISO9001 quality standards and specifications. The head of Quality Issues monitors, maintains, directs and ensures that the Institute's actions are carried out in accordance with the relevant standards and that employees are aware of the proper procedures to be followed. Within this unit, there is a team that ensures ethics, accessibility and gender equality, while at the same time ensuring accessibility to all facilities of the Institute and its website. The Ethical Issues Head collects and manages all the data in accordance with the GDPR by communicating the necessary data to the Central Administration as defined by the Regulations.
In addition, the Director is assisted by the Deputy HIT Director whenever necessary. Finally, across Greece there is a number of branches whose administration and management is conducted locally.
